An excerpt from Paul Mangiamele’s book Bennigan’s Return to Relevance: Bleeding Green 25/8

“I adamantly believe we experience a defining moment in all of our lives. However, in my case, although I was training with the best boxing coach in the history of the sport, my defining moment really wasn’t about pugilism at all; it was about learning how to strengthen your will.  Cus D’Amato taught me that the mind is a muscle, the more you exercise it the stronger it gets.

The way you exercise your mind is through the application of discipline.  Here is the core of it: whatever you want to do, you don’t do; and whatever you don’t want to do, you make yourself do. So, you don’t want to get up at 5 o’clock in the morning to go do roadwork, get your butt out of bed and go do the roadwork.  Apply that theory to two athletes or business colleagues who are either in a competition or trying to win a piece of business.

Winning the business isn’t about education, or what college you went to; the competition isn’t about the training you’ve done and none of it is about your level of experience – what it is about is who can impose his or her will to win or succeed. As it relates to business, the discipline process creates a “business athlete”.  Defined as someone who continually trains his mind and has the discipline to execute flawlessly.”
